Ahhhhh, April. Things are starting to heat up literally and figuratively around Des Moines. Here are a few things happening soon that you should get out and experience:

Family Friendly

Iowa Cubs Spring Open House
The home opener for the Iowa Cubs is next Tuesday, April 9th.

But before that, this Saturday, April 6th, Principal Park will be open to the public with their annual Open House. You can tour the entire ballpark including the press box, home clubhouse, and dugouts (weather permitting). Parking and admission are free, and each attendee will receive a free hot dog and a small drink at the event, as well as a General Admission voucher redeemable for one ticket to any April game or admission for two on Opening Day.

First Friday at Mainframe Studios
This monthly event is fun and family-friendly, and allows you to see what over 65 of Des Moines’ most talented artists are up to. The ground floor includes glass blowing demos and other studio spaces, the first floor has heavy hitters like Bozz Prints and Red Door Press, and the fourth floor is chalk full of smaller studios with artists making all sorts of amazing things. Most of the art is for sale, and food and drinks are available for purchase.

When: Friday, April 5th from 5-8pm

CoEd Sports Leagues
The Riverbend Sport and Social Club has opened registration for their spring CoEd Sports Leagues. Sports include flag football, kickball, grass volleyball, and 7v7 soccer.
Where: Games are played in various locations
When: Seasons start in early May and run through June
Cost: Cost varies based on sport chosen, but generally $30-45 per free agent, $200 per team

Give Back

Stand Up Event at Hello Marjorie, benefiting Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
On Saturday, April 6th, there will be a Stand Up Comedy event at Hello Marjorie. There will be a $20 cover at the door, which will include some complimentary drinks and the show with five comedians. The entry fee will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

The Riverwalk Hub
In arguably the best location in downtown Des Moines, the Riverwalk Hub is opening with a revamped menu for lunch Tuesday- Saturday from 11-2, and for happy hour from 3-6pm Tuesdays through Fridays.

The Thing You Know About

Lisa Ling: Bucksbaum Lecture Series
Twice a year, Drake hosts an acclaimed person to speak in their Bucksbaum Distinguished Lecture Series. Past speakers have included Thomas Friedman, Jane Goodall, Ken Burns, Winton Marsalis, Maya Angelou, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Jimmy Carter, Magic Johnson, Nina Totenburg… I could keep going.

The journalist, Lisa Ling will deliver the 40th lecture in the series.

The Thing You Don’t Know About

Karaoke at Gas Lamp
Gas Lamp has recently started hosting karaoke on Sunday and Tuesday evenings– but not just your usual karaoke– there will be a live band called Party! Party! for you to sing with.

April at the Well
Iowa Wild wraps up their season with four games in April, the last being on Saturday, April 13th
Iowa Barnstormers have a game at home on Saturday, April 6th at 7pm
The Harlem Globetrotters will be performing on April 14th at 2pm
Monster Jam Monster Truck Rally will be held on April 19th and 20th
WWE Raw will have a show on April 22nd at 6:30pm
Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour is a rodeo event that will be held on April 27th at 7pm
