Iowa Food Cooperative — Local Wonderland Winter Farmers’ Market
Keeping with the Farmers’ Market theme, there is a wonderful food cooperative on Franklin Avenue, called the Iowa Food Cooperative, that gives their members year-round access to local farmers and artisans that offer baked goods, dairy, fruits, grains, meat, and veggies.

They are hosting a free, open-to-everyone Local Wonderland Winter Farmers’ Market. It’s a couple of weeks away, so put it on your calendar now– Saturday, December 7th, at their location on Franklin Avenue from 9am-1pm. The market will have locally produced food and gifts– one more amazing opportunity to knock out some great holiday shopping and check out the coop while you’re there.

In 2015 they graduated to the food truck, and on November 1st, they retired the truck and opened a brick and mortar location in Beaverdale. They offer their old food truck favorites along with a new line of pizzas and several Gluten-free and vegan options.

The Dam Pub
Right across Beaver Avenue, in the old Reed’s Hollow location, a new pub has opened, that’s owned and operated by the Angry Goldfish people. It’s called the Dam Pub, and it’s an 80s and 90s throwback dive bar with, what I’m sure will be delicious, eclectic food. There is a menu posted on their website, and they’re open daily from 2pm to midnight.

Looking Ahead

Market Day
Let’s talk holiday shopping- and in my opinion- the BEST holiday shopping is done shopping locally, supporting makers directly. The easiest way to do that is to attend one of the Market Day events coming up.

Market Day is Des Moines’ favorite pop-up indie market and hosts local maker events several times per year. Next Friday, November 29th, skip the mall and find one-of-a-kind gifts at the Market Day Black Friday event. It’s happening in the Capital Square Atrium from 9am to 5pm. If you miss it, you’ll have another chance to attend their Merry Market Last Minute Gift Mart. This one is happening on Sunday, December 15th from 9am-5pm at the Hall in West Des Moines.
