DSM 411: February 5th, 2020

Goldie’s Kids Club
Here is a fun and free ongoing event series for your kids 12 and under. The State Historical Society has created Goldie’s Kids Club, which was created to introduce and engage kids in Iowa history. Select museum programs and events are open to kids signed up for the club. On a monthly basis, kids ages 3-7 are invited to a morning storytime. The next one is scheduled for Wednesday, February 19th at 10.

For kids 8-12 years old, there are monthly First Saturday programs, which either focus on Innovative Iowans, or an Iowa History Mystery. The next one is scheduled for March 7th, so sign up now and get this fun, free event on your calendar.

Shiver on the River
This Saturday, the most fun in Des Moines will be happening at Captain Roy’s. They are hosting their 3rd annual, completely free, Shiver on the River event. This event is about being ridiculous outside, and the weather looks like it will be perfection for this. At 10am, you can start signing up to participate in one of the 12 scheduled events, which include: frozen turkey bowling, beer cooler curling, a human dogsled race, and a Christmas Tree drag race. There will be a heated tent, food, drinks, dancing, and even cash prizes for the winners of each event.

Register for DAM to DSM
The 2020 DAM to DSM is the annual 20K race that runs from the Saylorville Dam to downtown Des Moines. Registration opened in December, but registration is still at a reasonable $55 for the race. That dollar amount will slowly creep up to $80 as more people register, so if you’re planning to participate, I’d register now.

Music Scene

It’s been awhile since we’ve talked about the music scene, and today I’d like to highlight a couple of things coming up at Wooly’s:

Tyler Farr @ Wooly’s
Country singer and songwriter Tyler Farr is coming to Wooly’s on Sunday, February 16th at 7:30pm. Tickets range from $30-75 and are still available as of 2/4.

Iration @ Wooly’s 
On Sunday, March 1st, head to Wooly’s to catch the alternative/reggae band called Iration. Those tickets are $25-119 and are still available as of 2/4.

V/Galentine’s Day

Come Pho Love (+ Beer)
If you’re looking for something a little different on Valentine’s Day, check out the event happening at Mainframe Studios. It’s called ‘Come Pho Love (+ Beer)’ and it is a beer, food and art event that will include six different food stations, a beer tasting, live music and a photo booth. On top of all of that, there will be some free hands-on activities available with Mainframe artists, as well as some add-on art experiences that you can pay for to upgrade your night, such as making a painting or glass etching.

Galentine’s Day Jazzercize
Celebrate Galentine’s Day with your favorite gals with Yoga and Co’s Galentine’s Day Jazzercize class. 80’s inspired leotards are encouraged in this 30-minute class filled with fun Jazzercize moves, followed by 30 minutes of an all-level yoga flow. Tickets are only $15, and include mimosas, snacks, and prizes for best 80’s costumes. this class is happening on Saturday, February 15th at 1pm, and tickets are still available as of 2/4.

The Thing You Don’t Know About

The Move Pt. 3
For the third time now, Des Moines Hip Hop artist, B.Well is hosting a showcase of local Des Moines artists. His events are called The Move, and this one, The Move Pt. 3 is being held at the original St. Kilda location on SW 5th this Saturday, February 8th from 6-9pm. Tickets are $5 and a dollar of each entry will be donated to an Australian Wildlife Rescue nonprofit. Food and drink will be available at the event which will include at least 24 local artists and their work.

Looking Ahead

Summer Concert Series @ Water Works Park
Last summer, Water Works Park broke in their brand-new Amphitheater with a summer concert series. That series is already coming together for the summer of 2020 with two musical acts in the books:
AJR will probably be kicking everything off on May 29th from 7-10pm. Tickets are available now from $40-60.
Trampled by Turtles and Wilco are booked for September 17th from 5:30-10pm. Tickets are on sale now from $35-100.
