Family Friendly

The Broadway Series at the Civic Center is gearing up to show the epic adventure story, Anastasia. There will be eight showings, beginning next Tuesday, February 25th and running through March 1st. Of note, the show is recommended for those 8 and older.

Next, the Des Moines Playhouse is ready to launch their next production, Tinkerbell, a show for ages 5 and up. The show will begin this Friday, February 21st and run with 15 performances through March 8th.

The Boy at the Edge of Everything
The Des Moines Young Artists’ Theater is a nonprofit theater organization on their 13th year of productions, and they have a show running right now at the Stoner Theater. It’s called, The Boy at the Edge of Everything. There are five showings left running this Thursday, February 20th through Sunday the 23rd.

Home & Remodeling Show
As we perch on the edge of spring, you may be thinking about projects around your house you’d like to tackle this year. If you are stuck with ideas or need some inspiration or resources, you should pop out to the Jacobson Building at the State Fairgrounds this weekend for the free, Home and Remodeling Show. There will be exhibitions, seminars, and a building filled with qualified home building and remodeling experts.

Get Active

Grand Blue Mile
The Grand Blue Mile is the annual 1-mile community road race that happens downtown on Locust St. and Grand Avenue. This is an all-ages, all-abilities race, with recreational and competitive options. After the race, participants can enjoy all sorts of festivities, including face painting, mascot races, and inflatables.

Give Back

DM Metro Opera: Wine, Food & Beer Showcase
Happening this Friday evening, the annual Wine, Food and Beer Showcase will be happening in support of the Des Moines Metro Opera. Starting in 1985, this event has become the opera’s signature fundraiser. You can attend for only $50, which will allow you to sample offerings from over 40 restaurants, caterers, wineries, breweries and distilleries in the area.

The Thing You Know About

State Wrestling
The State Wrestling tournament is happening at Wells Fargo Arena starting today with the Dual Tournament, followed by the Traditional tournament this Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $10 per session.

The Thing You Don’t Know About

Beer Art 101 @ Iowa Taproom
This Thursday at 7pm, the Iowa Taproom is hosting Sarah Hedlund, who is the creative director at Toppling Goliath Brewing Company. There will be 8 Toppling Goliath beers on tap, and Sarah will be discussing the creative process that goes into branding and the art that surrounds craft beer. The event is free, there will be giveaways, and beer samples may or may not be included.

Looking Ahead

Carousel Theatre: Eurydice
Just 17 miles south of Des Moines, you can catch Carousel Theatre, Indianola’s nonprofit community theater, putting on their next production, Eurydice, a modern retelling of the classic Greek tragedy with Orpheus and Eurydice. There will be six showings over two weekends in March — the 6th/7th and 13th/14th.
